Disclaimer: Please note that converting a vehicle for overlanding depends heavily on your individual needs and preferences . What is ideal for one person may look completely different for another traveler. The conversion presented here serves as an example and inspiration, but there are many different ways you can adapt your vehicle to your specific requirements and wishes.

The key to success: a stable roof rack platform

horntools ExRoof roof rack

A stable and robust roof rack is essential for any overlanding adventure, as it provides the foundation for your adventure. When converting the Land Rover Defender 110, we installed a horntools ExRoof roof rack platform as a base.

The ExRoof is our newest roof rack. Made from high-quality aluminum, this robust platform offers exceptional rigidity and versatility. With its tight fit to the car roof, the ExRoof minimizes wind noise for a quiet ride.

Note: The ExRoof roof rack platform shown for the Defender is a prototype. ExRoof roof racks for many other vehicle models can be found here .

What did the horntools team mount on the roof rack?

  • Awning: Awnings are extremely practical when overlanding, as they offer quick protection from sun and rain , making being outdoors more comfortable. We opted for the Horizon awning for the conversion. The special features: The awning is completely self-supporting, lightweight (<18 kg) and can be fully erected in under 3 minutes . The ExRoof awning bracket was used to make installation even easier.
  • Roof tent: A roof tent is indispensable for overlanding, as it not only offers you a comfortable and safe place to sleep , but also the flexibility to spend a night in almost any place. It protects you from moisture and unwanted insects and at the same time saves valuable space in the vehicle. When converting the Defender, the horntools team therefore used the hard-shell roof tent Themis , which impresses with its robust construction and easy handling (set up in under three minutes). Of course, you can also attach a folding tent to the roof rack. Here you can find more information about the differences between hard-shell and folding tents, as well as answers to common questions about them .
  • Shower tent: A shower tent is a must for overlanding, as it allows you to ensure hygiene while on the move and significantly increases your comfort. The horntools team used the Horizon shower tent for the Defender conversion, which provides optimal lighting with its stable construction and integrated LED strips. In addition, practical features such as integrated pockets and a hatch to the vehicle offer maximum functionality and flexibility. This means you can enjoy a refreshing shower at any time , no matter where your adventures take you.

Practical companions for on the go: transport box and recovery boards with holder

The right equipment is essential for a successful overlanding adventure. It was immediately clear to the team that the transport box and the recovery boards from horntools were a must.

The transport box impresses with its robust construction, which offers optimal protection for your equipment. Thanks to the rubber seal, the box is completely waterproof, so that your luggage stays dry even in adverse weather. Fastening eyes on all four sides enable secure fastening with lashing straps on the roof rack, while the carrying handles on both sides make transport easier, but the box can also be easily stowed in the trunk of the vehicle. In addition, a practical drain in the floor ensures that liquids can be easily drained.

The recovery boards offer unbeatable grip in mud, sand, snow and other difficult terrain thanks to their robust traction design. The versatile sand boards are perfect for self-recovery and offer additional safety on every trip. With the additional horntools recovery board mount, the boards can be attached directly to the roof rack, so they are always within reach when you need them most. The mount is universally applicable and compatible with various roof rack systems, including the horntools ExRoof roof rack.

Note: In addition to the recovery boards, which provide excellent first aid for self-rescue, an outdoor shovel is also an extremely useful tool. It can help you free your vehicle quickly and effectively in many situations.

Your home in the wilderness: camping furniture, lamps and practical organizers

When you head out into the wilderness, it's important to be not only safe but also comfortable. The right camping furniture , such as sturdy chairs and tables, will provide you with the comfort you need after a day outdoors. A reliable lamp will provide the lighting you need so you can continue your activities safely and relaxed even in the dark. Practical organizers will help you keep your equipment tidy and within reach so you can concentrate on what's important - enjoying your adventure. These items of equipment will transform your camp into a real home in the open air and make a decisive contribution to a pleasant overlanding experience.

Well equipped: off-road tools for demanding terrain

If you want to experience the thrill of real off-roading and go beyond classic overlanding, you can also equip yourself with a range of off-road accessories . Compressors and cable winches are particularly popular here.

Compressors allow you to quickly adjust tire pressure to improve traction in changing conditions such as mud, sand or snow.Winches are essential for self-recovery and help you get your vehicle out of tricky situations.
